Volcano boats run from about April to October, with the most departures from June to September. The sweet spots are late May–June and September–early October: the sea is warm enough for the hot springs, the crater trail is bearable, and there are fewer people than in peak summer.
Season at a glance
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| April – May | Fewer boats, fresh air, cool sea. Great for hiking; bring a layer. |
| June | Long days, warm sea, crowds building. An excellent all-round month. |
| July – August | Peak season. Hot trail, busiest boats, book ahead. Choose morning trips. |
| September – early October | Warm sea, calmer crowds, softer light. Often the best month. |
| November – March | Most tours stop. Crossings depend on the weather and demand. |
Best time of day
- Morning (9–11 am): coolest walk and calmest sea. Best for families and photographers.
- Midday: the black lava is at its hottest. Avoid in July and August if you can.
- Afternoon into sunset: combine the volcano with sunset off Oia on a full-day or catamaran trip.
Wind and sea conditions
Summer’s meltemi north wind can blow hard for a few days at a time. Boats still run in most conditions inside the caldera, but the swim at the hot springs can be rough. Tours sometimes switch routes or times — another reason to book an option with free cancellation.
Cruise ship days
Santorini is a major cruise port. On days with several ships at anchor, the Old Port and cable car are busiest from mid-morning. A departure from Athinios or Vlychada, or a private boat, avoids the queue.
