Palea Kameni (“Old Burnt Island”) is the smaller, older neighbour of Nea Kameni. In a narrow cove on its eastern side, volcanic springs warm the sea and colour it a deep orange from dissolved iron.
How the swim works
Boats can’t reach the springs directly, so they anchor nearby and you swim the last stretch — usually a few dozen metres. The water gets noticeably warmer and murkier as you enter the cove. It’s pleasantly warm rather than hot.
Good to know
- You need to be a confident swimmer; life jackets or noodles are available on most boats
- Wear dark swimwear — the iron can stain light fabrics
- On windy days the swim can be choppy, and the captain may cancel it for safety
