Nea Kameni

The Nea Kameni crater hike

A lava trail to the active Georgios crater, with fumaroles, warm ground and the best views of the caldera cliffs.

Updated 1 min read

The main reason to land on Nea Kameni is the walk to its summit craters. From the small jetty, a marked trail climbs through black and rust-coloured lava fields to the rim of the Georgios crater, one of the youngest vents on the island.

The trail

The path is roughly 30–40 minutes uphill at an easy pace, on loose volcanic gravel with a few steeper sections. There is no shade. Guides stop along the way to explain the eruptions that built the island between 1707 and 1950.

What you'll see

  • Fumaroles — small vents where warm, sulphur-scented gas escapes
  • Lava flows from different eruptions, each a slightly different colour
  • Panoramic views of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia lining the caldera rim
